fashion designer

Kat Smith is a new graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Fashion and a concentration in Design. She hopes to gain employment as a technical designer. In addition to VCU, Kat also studied at Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy in spring of 2023. There, immersed in local traditions, she developed a profound appreciation for handmade lace, a recurring theme in her work. Her passion for design began with her attendance at the Governor’s School for the Arts during her high school years. Kat's diverse artistic background includes figure drawing and fiber arts, yet fashion remains her primary focus.

Over the past four years, Kat has refined her patternmaking, construction, and illustration skills, mastering Adobe Illustrator and CLO 3D. Specializing in women’s intimate apparel design, her ethereally feminine creations, inspired by romance and nature, showcase a delicate balance between sensuality and whimsy. From soft chiffons in pastels to playful hand-tied closures, her pieces have graced prestigious runways, including the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Harrison Opera House, earning her a People’s Choice prize at the “Amazing Chaos” Wearable Art Fashion Show.
